Chloe’s Persona Poem
For all of the main characters in my novels, I make simple, eight-line persona poems that quickly help me identify who they are at a “heart” level. Usually I write these poems well into the first draft of my novel after I’ve spent some time with my characters. In Chloe’s case, I created this persona poem before I wrote a single word. From the get-go, Chloe was very clear (and very loud!) in my head.
Outgoing, sharp-witted, big-hearted, dramatic
Queen of late night radio
Who loves the spotlight, Twizzlers, vintage shoes
Who fears blood, Brie Sonderby’s lies, being alone
Who wants to see a passing JISP, adoring radio fans, Duncan’s smile
Resident of a lonely junior year of high school
- Chloe’s Theme Song: Everything’s Okay by Lenka.
Lenka’s music is quirky, textured, and upbeat. A perfect fit for irrepressible Chloe. “Everything’s Okay” is a song about a girl whose life comes crashing down on her, and like Chloe, she admits she’s responsible for the “messy life I made for myself.” I love this bold truth. And I love her response. She crawls out of bed and looks for “a little sunshine,” seeking love and hope from those around her. Chloe does the same thing, turning to guarded-heart Duncan, spunky Grams, and the radio station staff.
